Speakers

Professor Kiran Trehan – Pro- Vice Chancellor and Director of the Centre Women’s Entrepreneurship, Leadership Economy and Diversity

Professor Kiran Trehan is the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Partnerships and Engagement at the University of York and Director of the Centre for Women’s Enterprise, Leadership, Economy & Diversity. She is a key contributor to debates on leadership, enterprise development and diversity in small firms and business. She has led a number of leaderships, enterprise and business support initiatives and has extensively published a number of journal articles, policy reports, books and book chapters in the field.

She has a national and international reputation in a senior research and in 2019, she was elected to be the President of the Institute for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ISBE). ISBE is the leading national body for SME research and policy learning. She was invited to be one of the lead commissioners on the West Midlands Leadership Commission to lead a new research and policy agenda on leadership diversity for Andy Street Electoral Mayor and the West Midlands combined authority. The final report was commended by the Prime Minister Theresa May and was featured in the Times Higher.

Bethany Watrous – Founder, Experience Heritage

Bethany graduated from the University of York in 2019 with a Masters in Archaeology of Buildings and specialises in the creation of digital media for heritage as a form of research and exhibition. She founded Experience Heritage in 2019, filling the need for a digital media company who understands the specific needs of heritage clients. Experience Heritage provides 3D modelling, photogrammetry, augmented and virtual reality, mobile and web development, film and photo editing services around the UK and has already worked with clients like the National Trust and the University of York.  

Ann Gurnell – Marketing Director, Ideas Group

An organisational strategy, branding, marketing and ideation leader, Ann describes herself as being part analyst and part creative and love enabling businesses, their brands and people to thrive; creating rich brand experiences, storytelling and smart effective campaigns to inspire engagement, deliver the bottom line and help them be the best they can be. A mixture of down to earth thinking and disruptive alchemy!

She works with international brands, SMEs and entrepreneurs across all kinds of sectors: FMCG, food, destinations and economic development; tourism; media arts and tech; healthcare, professional services, property… UK Parliament to KitKat, Stryker Medical, to Levi’s, Palace Capital to Roche Legal, York to EMEA…. inspiring internally and externally. She is also a Fellow of the RSA – uniting people and ideas to solve the challenges of our time, Fellow of the Tourism Society and Past Master of the Guild of Media Arts.

Delma Tomlin MBE – Director, National Centre for Early Music

Lady Jane Gibson

After graduating from Hull University with a degree in Drama & English in 1985, Jane worked in theatre, film, television, radio, the record industry and marketing and PR in London. During this time she was housekeeper to Doris Lessing the novelist.

She moved to the North East in 1996 where she established Joined Up North, a consultancy business specialising in strategic development, regeneration and place marketing though culture, heritage and tourism projects.

Following a move back to her home county of Yorkshire in 2009 she is now working in non-executive roles. Jane is chair of Spirit of 2012, the London 2012 legacy charity, founded by the National Lottery Community Fund in 2013 with a £47m endowment. She also chairs the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site Partnership Board. She is a director of the York & North Yorkshire LEP.

She was founding chair of Make It York, a destination management and business development company and until recently she chaired the Culture & Place Strategic Advisory Group in Hull.
